What would be good fish to put in with Blue Gouramis?

I'm getting a 55 galllon tank, and I'm putting 3 pictus cats and a rainbow shark in for sure. As these are both mid-bottom dwellers, I would like to have a mid-top dweller to finish the tank. I prefer gouramis to tiger barbs. So, if I get 1 male blue gourami, what else could I get? Or would I be better off getting 2 females and 1 male, then call it fully stocked?
