Can't Propose in Fable 3?

I'm female in Fable 3 and have wooed (she's in love with me) Esmeralda the Dweller in the Dweller Camp. Her status is Common, Lesbian. I have two properties (not sure if that matters at all) and have bought a wedding ring in Brightwall Village but when I ask her to marry me, it tells me that I need to have a wedding ring before I can propose and won't let me go any further. I don't get what I'm doing wrong? Anybody else have a similar problem and know how to resolve it? Thanks.
